Matthew 15:22-28Amplified Bible (AMP)
22 And a Canaanite woman from that district came out and began to cry out [urgently], saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David (Messiah); my daughter is cruelly possessed by a demon.” 23 But He did not say a word in answer to her. And His disciples came and asked Him [repeatedly], “Send her away, because she keeps shouting out after us.” 24 He answered, “I was commissioned by God and sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 But she came and began to kneel down before Him, saying, “Lord, help me!” 26 And He replied, “It is not good (appropriate, fair) to take the children’s bread and throw it to the pet dogs.” 27 She said, “Yes, Lord; but even the pet dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their [young] masters’ table.”28 Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, your faith [your personal trust and confidence in My power] is great; it will be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed from that moment.
Every single person on the planet has a story. The amazing thing is this story is not written on the face. Some people look all yummy and gorgeous but they are going through some really terrible stuffs. But not everyone has the ability to hide their ugly situations from individuals or the general public. When the situation is heavy, names can be replace with the situations men go through. The “Woman with the issue of blood” sure had a name. “Blind Bartimaeus” sure had a first name. The “Crippled man by the pool of bethesda” and others too numerous to mention all had names but the situation superseded their names and gained an upper hand. The story above is one of persistence. It’s one of perseverance. It’s one of a goal getter. It’s one of a tough skin lady who is determined not to throw in the towel while men try to confuse her and even the Son of God gave her a busy face.
Canaan depicts a land flowing with milk and honey, the land of freedom. This was the land this woman came from but that didn’t deprived issues or troubles from hitting at her. In life, things happen around us, things happen to us, but the only thing that truly matters is what happens within us. She could’ve relax hiding behind the mask of “self” I don’t need any help, I can do it by myself, I can fix this, and on and on…..but she moved out of her comfort zone and came to Jesus for help. It wasn’t some cold or cough, fever or fracture of the bone; her daughter was carrying another being inside of her. She was possessed of a demon. She might have tried using physical measures but all to no avail. She came with humility to Jesus and besought him to heal her child and the bible said “He answered her not a word”. What do you do when the very person you placed your hope on ignores you and gives you a cold response?
Some folks will hit the quit button and walk away. Some other folks will go around spreading ill report about the persons behaviour towards them. But this woman’s pessimism and optimism was superb. There was no quit or backbiting button in her dictionary. Her voice which signifies her consistency grew even louder to the point the disciples of Jesus had to ask him repeatedly to send this woman away. She understood the power of words. Even though she wasn’t an Israelite, she knew her mouth was given her to chant the course of her life and since her child can’t do it at the moment, she resolved to stand in the gap for her child and kept shouting “Lord, I know you a busy man but my daughter needs you even now”. There comes a point in life when the very person you expect to support you in your moment of need, will be the same person who will suppress the desire to look up to a man; but at that point, they are actually helping you focus on God who is your very present help in the time of trouble. Jesus finally answered and said “Hey pals, I’m only sent to the lost sheep of the house of israel” In other words this woman is not a sheep, she’s something else.
At this point, she forced her way through the disciples, knelt down and begged Him even more for her child’s life to be transformed. How she managed to push through the crowds was untold. Jesus was an influential personality and there’s the possibility of multitudes of people with diverse kinds of illness who wants to have an encounter with Him but lack the “Press on till you get it attitude of this woman”. This is the kind of attitude that yields results but not just results, but extraordinary results. The attitude of a Winner who gets up one more time than he’s knocked down. When Thomas Edison was asked if he’s discouraged over his countless failed attempts to produce the light bulb, he replied “I am not discouraged because every wrong attempt discarded is a step forward “. When there was every reason for the woman to quit and walk away, she remembered the one reason she held on in the first place.
Finally Jesus answered her directly saying “It is not good (appropriate, fair) to take the children’s bread and throw it to the Dogs” which is a confirmation to the first response to the disciples….. I’m only sent to the lost sheep of the house of israel, not to Dogs. Though the woman was pessimistic and optimistic, she was also focused on her quest for her daughter. Sometimes one can be so optimistic and loss track of the goal set before Him. That only happens when your goal isn’t driving you but just the refusal of not giving up does. That is an incomplete equation. Pessimism, Optimism are good qualities but they are useless if the goal is given less priority. Because she was focused, she decoded quickly what Jesus was talking about and replied him with a better code. She said calmly and warmly “Yes Lord, but even the dogs eats the crumbs that falls from the masters table. In other words, “I might be a dog! But even the dogs eat the crumbs that falls from the masters”. She was indirectly saying “for this case that concern my lovely child, I will be a dog. I don’t care if its a left over food,
I will take it and give it to my child because the food wasn’t coming from the table of a slave but from the table of the Master…. What an insightful woman. If this scenario had happened in this present generation, the outcome may be devastating. Immediately Jesus made that statement about dogs you will hear stuffs like “Hold it right there Jesus or whoever you think you are. You’re calling me a dog because I asked you to help my daughter? You can go to hell with your help I’ll deal with this myself” or “With the head rolling you hear, Omg! Did you just called me a dog? Who the hell are you?”…….and many more.
This lady held on. She refused to give up. She refused to throw in the towel. She refused to be tagged as an object of shame and reproach, and put an end to the ridicules she receives daily. “Hey guys, here’s the woman with a possessed daughter” She said to herself “You’re dead to every ill word anyone including the one who has the authority to heal will say”. And to the demon she said “Today is your end in my daughters body, another master (Jesus) who is Lord will kick you out today and you will never have your way no more. What a spirit! When Jesus saw how persistent she was, He said to her “Woman, your Faith is great, it will be done for you as you wish”. And her daughter was healed from that moment. Jesus was saying “Woman you really are a goal getter. The crowd could not stop you, my disciples could not hold you, even my words could not make you change your mind. You held on till this very moment therefore, have what you came for”.
We also can be like this woman whenever life throws ugly stuffs at us, we simply use them as stepping stones. When you get into that tight corner and there seems to be pressure from every side and it looks as if you can’t win, don’t give up, because that is the very moment the tide will take a U-turn to your favour. Don’t be discouraged, its always the last key that opens the door. Press on…… stay focus on the dreams, the goals and the desires but trust God and not man. “Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your path” it is simply saying “Trust God with all your goals, don’t rely completely on yourself. In all your goals and dreams, let him be in charge, place them all in His hands and He will direct your path to its fulfilment”. Also, Proverbs 19:21 Many plans are in a man’s mind, but it is the Lord’s purpose for him that will stand. Don’t give up, you can make it, you will make it…. Victory is sure………………..
