Now when Jesus was in the Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,
there came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very
Precious ointment, and poured it in his head as he sat at meat.
But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying,
To what purpose is this waste?
For this ointment might have being sold for much and given to
When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, why trouble ye
the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me.
For ye have the poor always with you, but me ye have not always.
For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it
for my burial.
Verily I say unto you, wheresoever this gospel shall be preached
in the world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be
told for a memorial of her.
What an amazing woman and an amazing way to show her Love for the master (Jesus). I’ve always wondered about this story and its significance in the life of a believer. The Life of this woman wasn’t all messed up from the start. She was a beautiful, glowing, and elegant woman made in the image and likeness of God. When people saw her, they call her blessed. She was indeed the daughter of Abraham who Satan transformed her life into a mess and sends wrong message of her. Situations heated up everyday with no clue on how to come out of it or solve them. She tried all she could as a multitasking personality but the troubles kept multiplying. Until finally she used the most powerful weapon God gave to human’s “Her tongue” to proclaim “This problem is more than me, and I’m ready to do anything to survive, even if it means using my body as a bait to get it”
At that moment, the heavens established her decrea and she turned out to have what she spoke. Sometimes things can be pretty rough to the point you are tempted to exalt the situation above you, but if you stay focused and not use your mouth wrongly but rightly, things will take a different turn. She became a prostitute who worked all day to earn a living. People always say, when they’re going through tough times “I had no choice” but that can’t be true. There’s always a choice to make. The best choice you can make in life is not making any choice at all and saying there was no choice to be made. And so, it all began so smooth. Even though she was making a living from her own body but the satisfaction was missing. She made a lot of money, took care of her physical needs but she could not give the need that her soul wanted. Wealth is good, but it shouldn’t be at the expense of your soul. There’s always a craving that the soul needs. The need to be reunited with her creator (God), and nothing else in this world can fill that vacuum. Even though man may get into various activities to fill that vacuum, it can not be filled. Just like you can’t implant a Toyota engine into a Ford car to fix it, so can nothing else take the place of God to fix man.
Within herself, she wanted a change….even though things were working fine for her, but they were not working through the right source (God). God is the source of life, salary, cars, are all means of living. I was surprised that Jesus was in the house of a leper and it wasn’t recorded that he was healed. That’s how People come to church with their problems and return same way they came; why? I’ve come to understand that people sometimes get too familiar with the priest that their minds are already fixed on what he will say and how will he say it.I’m not saying that was the problem of Simon but it might be. But its a problem in this very generation. People have programmed their minds and limited God in their thoughts by calculating spiritual things with physical minds. They forget that God is not a man and what He says He will do, irrespective of who we are, just to receive the glory. If Faith truly comes by hearing God’s word, then it doesn’t matter who speaks the word, as long as its the word of Grace. As we constantly receive God’s word, Faith is built up in our spirit to the point we can receive those things that are freely given to us by God. So, Faith does not move God like some says it does but Faith actually moves you to that position where you believe God beyond all reasonable doubts that He is able and then you claim what He has done for you.
And so, it was that someone told the woman about Jesus. That is how Faith moves….. you hear it and keep hearing it until you finally take a drastic move. She might’ve being told about sweet Jesus and His healing power but most importantly about His ability to forgive sins. Someone might have told her about the woman caught in the very act of adultery, the man whose friends broke the roof and led him down for Jesus to heal him and the first statement Jesus made to him was “You sins are forgiven”. She might’ve being contemplating in her heart and saying within herself “He (Jesus) doesn’t know the mess I’m in, if He does, he won’t just proclaim forgiveness over me” but someone might’ve told her “Hey Mary Magdalene, don’t worry, He is actually looking and waiting for you to return to Him. She might ask, why? And the person replies” “He was made sin for your sake so you can become God’s righteousness “. These words melted into her spirit like wax and later solidifies to the point she told herself “I will go to Him just as I am, if He can make me clean, I will give Him my life”. This reminded me of a story told by Robby Dawkins about a woman in a grocery store who said “God, if you really want to have me, bring someone here who will stand on her hands for me” funny statement huh? But God actually did it. He ordered the steps of a woman down to the store and straight to where the woman who made the funny statement was standing and said “Ma’am look at what I can do, and stood on her hands” the other woman started to started to cry….the Woman who stood on her hands asked “what’s wrong, did I do something wrong? She said No! I told God to send someone to do what you just did”. That was how she gave her life to Christ.
Sometimes we put God to the test by making different statements………. God if you do this, I’ll do that…God did it, not because of your statement but because He Loves you and wants to glorify Himself from that situation you went through. And so it came happened that she proposed in her hearts saying “Even if He will make me clean, I will give unto Him something that will cost me something”. She gathered her savings and bought an expensive ointment that has the ability to fill a house with its aroma. She could’ve just bought a single bottle but she box…. meaning it was a massive one. She didn’t border to touch it and apply it gradually on Him; God’s word declared that she poured it on Him, she lavished it on Him. As she pours it, she said “This oil is expensive but you are more precious than it; you who is able to make me whole and forgive me, I give you my all; I don’t care who is watching and what they will say, I will publicly show to You how much I adore You, love and cherish You”. People will always say stuffs about you when you do the right thing in relation to God but if you don’t make a change from the right path, you become a memorial. Scripture says the disciples were filled with indignation….. but why the disciples? Sometimes those who will say those hurtful words to you are from the church. Those people assumed to be perfect. Well people also need to know that there’s no perfect church and that the church is a clinic for those who are going through the process of being transformed so they too can become transforming agents.
So, when she didn’t replied the disciples, the one she adored spoke for her.. “but I should reply them so they’ll know I’m not all quite“. Well, that’s what someone who is a people pleaser will do. She had every right to reply the disciples who weren’t minding their business but her focus was please God. When we do things with the mindset of pleasing God, there’s an eternal reward. Jesus replied them saying “Why trouble her”? In other words, she wasn’t ministering to you, she was ministering to me, so let her be. She has done a good thing unto me…………… wherever the gospel is preached, what she has done will be talked about. Now Jesus made a futuristic decrea over her life. She never poured that ointment with the mindset of receiving such a word. She came as she was and gave her all. We must come with our all to Him who is able to take it and turn it around for His glory. She was sincere with herself and didn’t hold back to any part of her that she deemed special. She realise all that she is and all she will be can only be changed by Jesus and she wasn’t ready to take any chances of saying “Lord, take this part and handle it real good. I will handle this other part”.That is what we do sometimes when we come to Him with hands lifted up but with a closed heart. Though He wants all of you, but He can’t forcefully have all of you. The power of choice comes into play here. His heart and arm’s are always wide open to receive you when you decide to return to Him. He’s a loving Father who is slow to anger and His loving kindness endures to all generations.
If He can transform, modify and utterly change the life of Mary, and made her a memorial, yours can not be an exception…….He’s waiting on you… He Loves you so much….make a choice today and completely give Him your all.
